About the Music of Central Asia Series
Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, in collaboration with the Aga Khan Music Initiative (a program of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture), is producing a 10-CD/DVD set documenting the musics of Central Asia.
Smithsonian Folkways Recordings released nine volumes of its new Music of Central Asia series from 2006-2010.This ground-breaking, newly recorded series presents authentic musical traditions of Central Asia as they are performed today, featuring some of the region's most outstanding artists. From the nomadic and bardic cultures of the steppes to the classical court traditions of the cities, this series celebrates musicians who display a mastery of older traditions and also embody a contemporary spirit of innovation. Produced in conjunction with the Aga Khan Music Initiative, each release includes an extensive color booklet and comes with a vivid bonus DVD containing a series introduction, 24-minute film, interactive glossary and map.
About Smithsonian Folkways Recordings
Smithsonian Folkways Recordings is the nonprofit record label of the Smithsonian Institution, the national museum of the United States. We are dedicated to supporting cultural diversity and increased understanding among peoples through the documentation, preservation, and dissemination of sound. We believe that musical and cultural diversity contributes to the vitality and quality of life throughout the world.
Through the dissemination of audio recordings and educational materials we seek to strengthen people's engagement with their own cultural heritage and to enhance their awareness and appreciation of the cultural heritage of others. Our mission is the legacy of Moses Asch, who founded Folkways Records in 1948 to document "people's music," spoken word, instruction, and sounds from around the world.
The Smithsonian acquired Folkways from the Asch estate in 1987, and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings has continued the Folkways commitment to cultural diversity, education, increased understanding, and lively engagement with the world of sound.
About the Aga Khan Music Initiative
The Aga Khan Music Initiative was created by His Highness the Aga Khan in 2000 to support the efforts of Central Asian musicians to sustain musical traditions which had become vulnerable. Its activities are centered on three programme areas: Supporting Tradition-Bearers, Documentation and Dissemination, and International Performance and Outreach. Its overarching objectives are to assure the transmission of musical skills, knowledge and experience from one generation to the next, raise the prestige of traditional music and musicians in their own communities, and stimulate innovative collaborations between musicians from Central Asia and beyond the region.
